Two Days' Worth of Items

I haven't gotten anything good in the mail lately (especially since today is Sunday, haha), so I have a few tidbits from yesterday and today to pass along. Nothing too major, but I do like to keep posting so I don't start slacking too much with the blog!

Firstly, I have come to quite enjoy using two Splenda tabs with  my organic stevia; it cuts some of the very mild bitter flavor from the stevia and makes a sweetness combination that really appeals to me. Today I just kept my little box of tabs in my pocket and pulled it out for coffee time.
This stuff is starting to grow on me.
It works really great combined with my stevia.

Also on the "freebie" side of life, I have been getting tons of written off food items and passing them along to my chickens. They seem to really love chicken salad (is it wrong that I am somewhat turning them into cannibals?) and other softer items... and apples! I dice the apples and other larger veggies up a bit so they can pick at the insides better. Since we are out of grain to feed them, I think the free items from work that humans don't want (or won't eat) will become my primary method of feeding my chickens. I have enough in my fridge still to feed them for a few days on top of whatever I'll get on Wednesday when I go back to work. I'm glad chickens will eat pretty much anything! On a sad note, we've lost our rooster (disappeared three days ago), one more chick (Chris stepped on it; we have eight left)... and I haven't seen our other hen today (she might be hiding out under my house AGAIN). I hope at least the second hen turns up.

So, here we go again with garden related items. My first issue came up when I went out to check on my zucchinis that are growing (I had three that were pretty good sized and not far from needing to be picked). I took a close look at one of them and noticed something... amiss.
Snails are NOT friends of the garden.
Don't get me wrong, I kind of think snails are cute, but I find that my enjoyment of snails greatly decreases when I find them devouring one of the few squash I have in my garden. Needless to say, this group of snails went to the concrete and got obliterated by my foot. I am going to have to keep a close eye out for more; I found this huge one yesterday on my stevia and relocated it to my chickens' pen area eventually.
Found this guy on my stevia yesterday.
My daughter (4 y.o.) was NOT amused and wanted it off her.

I am looking at a good jalapeno harvest I think, however. My potted pepper plant looks very nice and is starting to get loaded with blooms and baby fruit. I got a great picture of it from a funny angle!
One of my favorite garden pics.
Jalapenos are on the way; this plant is very healthy.
I am not the biggest fan of hot peppers, but I'll find some way of using these guys, even if it's a very minute amount in stir frys that I do for myself with other veggies. I know better than to use the inside ribs or the seeds though; they are way too spicy for my tastes and not removing them in the past made me waste a whole set of stuffed peppers I was doing! (Great tip for those of you not familiar with hot peppers - the white "ribs" and the seeds are the hottest parts; carefully removing all of those and just using the greener parts of the pepper - or whatever color your pepper is - will remove a large part of the spice of it!)

The herbs are especially growing well; I don't have any pictures that do them justice, but my dill, basil and chives are all thriving in their respective parts of the garden or the pots. I did take a picture of my four or five foot bed where I have a few plants living - including my huge peppermint plant.
Leftmost: Purple bell peppers (yeah they are tiny)
Middle: monstrous peppermint bush.
Far right: Lavender plant which has been doing better.
I'm really hoping my two little purple bell pepper plants greatly increase their growth rate sometime this season so I can get a couple of peppers from them perhaps. They really are struggling, but the topmost one especially is growing albeit in a super slow fashion. I'd say this peppermint bush, at the widest point, is close to three feet wide... and it definitely is still growing. I had to push it back from the peppers so they could get a bit more light and have space to grow.

I ate for free for a few days thanks to a lot of free squash (today the last bit of those went to the chickens; they were getting mushy). I made a few dishes, one of which was free tomato basil goat feta mixed in the pan cooked squash.
Pretty good tasting dish for being entirely free.
Feeding myself, since I eat so little processed foods and no grains, is never a cheap matter if it involves me shopping. I am glad to take home a few very slightly imperfect veggies so I get to have free meals for a little bit. The chickens even appreciate them once they get too mushy!

How are y'all keeping it freebie? I would love to hear from anyone that wants to comment or chat about homesteading, either. Leave me some feedback!

Homestead Overload

I haven't received anything new in a few days, so this post will definitely be focused on my homestead today. The garden is starting to get ready for phase 2 of the summer season; I have blooms starting on my tomatoes, peppers, sunflowers, and watermelon plants.
Jalapeno; two white blooms with more close to this size.
Sunflower with a bloom starting to grow.
Watermelon bloom is the white in the middle of the picture.
Not only are the plants with edible fruit or seeds doing well, my herbs are looking nice too. I have large dill plants, quite a few nice looking basil plants, my huge peppermint bush, lavender, tarragon, and chives and stevia below along with a non-edible citronella plant.
 Chives; three total bunches growing.
Not edible, but citronella keeps the mosquitoes away on the porch.
Stevia, about three feet tall.
Might try brewing teas with these tossed in.
Today at work I scored a large box full of produce (apples and yellow squash). The squash were very edible, so not only did I cook some for myself (after I pan sauteed it I mixed it with some free goat feta I got - great meal for tomorrow) - I used three squash and two apples, diced up together, as chicken food today. They loved it and were so excited!
Starting to really get large amounts of food for these guys.
Got so much today still have more for tomorrow.
Now that I'm really focusing on getting them free things from work, I'm starting to notice more and more things that they'd really enjoy. These squash really were beautiful, and the apples only had a few deep bruises on them, which the chickens of course don't give a hoot about!! If I keep looking for good freebies at work for these guys they will eat in high style for a long time to come.

I started using a free genealogy program (love open source projects), Gramps. It was highly rated on a couple of websites, and it is serving my purposes nicely. After learning the basics of how to use it, I can quickly add on information without too much hassle and can go back later to add events (births, deaths, etc) when I am done with the basic tree. My cousin can be blamed for my sudden vault back into this sort of thing; I love doing it, but I admittedly get burned out after a while. Right now it's full swing ahead! I am doing each grandparents' tree separately as I can.

Genealogy, Garden Dinner, VoxBox Shipped!

One of my older cousins has decided to collaborate a bit in the spirit of creating a family tree. Genealogy is an avid interest of mine, but I admittedly only do it every once in a while. When he asked me about our tree, I got interested and started working on a record of sorts of our own family tree from our mutual grandmother's side. Using FREE resources through Rootsweb and other online search projects, I am easily able to find most of my paternal grandmother's family tree with a few holes here and there. My other family members are more difficult from a free standpoint, but I highly suggest Rootsweb if your family has a well-documented genealogy.

Tonight I'm cleaning out some items out of my fridge and using a zucchini in my garden to make a squash hash of sorts. I am using a yellow squash (free from work), my zucchini, and a leftover hunk of summer sausage. I diced them all up...
Before being cooked... diced to perfection! Looks pretty.
I seem to be one of the few people out there that prefers her veggies cooked down a bit to where they are soft. I cooked this down with some spices and a dash of lemon juice (I cook with lemon ALL the time); once most of the liquid cooked out this is what I was left with.
Finished dish. This is DELICIOUS.
Needless to say, I couldn't resist eating a bit of this immediately. It tastes SO amazing. It's one of the best foods I've eaten in a long time, and it's perfectly on plan for me (fresh cooked, very little carb, good amount of healthy fats - also cooked this stuff in about 3T of butter too).

Lastly, I am super excited to announce that my first VoxBox from Influenster has shipped today! My dashboard on their page shows a tracking number, and I should have it arrive sometime next week. Free things are super awesome, and I am really hyped up for my first box with full sized samples to really go through and use; in return all of these products get my unbiased opinion about their items. I love getting things for free, and I greatly appreciate Influenster for picking me for the Nurture VoxBox.

My perfume still is not here; I am going to be checking my account soon to see if I can get an expected delivery date. I am sure it will arrive any time but it has been a while now.

Keep it freebie folks.

May's PINCHme, Numi Tea sample

Well, beyond being super busy at work with cleaning, keeping the shelves stocked, and helping customers, today was a super awesome day. How can a day not be awesome when it involves me picking up my FL Country Superfest tickets (and getting the days off to go!), getting a PINCHme box in the mail (woop!), and getting a three pack of KCup tea samples from Numi (yum, one is Earl Grey my favorite!). I am so happy to share with you the goodies I have!
May PINCHme box. I will use the body wash tonight; used Splenda in my tea.
I admit, I have come to LOVE a super smelly body wash; this one is a strong strawberry smell that is totally delicious! It rivals the tasty smell that my Garnier Fructis samples have (their volumizing line has a strawberry/berry type of smell too, which came in my Sample Source box). I will definitely report back with how good I smelled afterwards. Caress currently is my favorite body wash; I always smell awesome for quite a while afterwards and feel so clean because of it. If this is like that then I'll be happy!

I already used three of the Splenda Minis (each mini tab is equal to a half of a packet of Splenda). For me, to reach a level of sweetness that was okay in my Numi Aged Earl Grey tea, I needed three tabs. I do not taste any aftertaste or unpleasantness; unlike many other sweetners I have had, I only had to use a small and very reasonable amount to make my beverage sweet. It's a lot better than the mass market stevias like Pure Via, Truvia, Zing, etc. and on par with Equal.
Button on the bottom left dispenses tabs.
Three was perfect for my taste. Not bad tasting at all.
As always, my biggest complaint is that it's not an all natural sweetener. I'll always be partial to natural products and super high quality stevia in particular, but this isn't a bad product at all. I could definitely see myself using this; now they need to figure out a way to get heavy cream in a travel type container so I can have coffee anywhere. It would be nice not to be required to take my coffeemaker everywhere!

So, speaking of Numi Tea, I received a three pack of their teas in KCup form and tried the Aged Earl Grey (Earl Grey, so far, is my favorite type of tea to drink; I've only tried a few other teas).
Tomorrow I'll try the mint tea.
I will try the Jasmine Green, but I don't like green tea much.
My favorite! Glad this was in the pack.
The Aged Earl Grey was tasty; I like a splash of cream and sweetener in my tea and this tasted nice when it was done as such. I am a huge fan of bergamot so it's no surprise that Earl Grey is so tasty to me.

I am expecting my box any day now (!!!) with my designer fragrance that I purchased for $10. I also should have a VoxBox shipping soon that I get to complete activities with and do many, many blog posts on. Influenster is kicking butt, this is my second campaign since I joined. There will be many more to come, thanks Influenster.

Keep it freebie, folks.

Microwave Keto Cake, Candles

So, I have recently become obsessed with a concoction that is generally referred to as a microwave cake. The special thing about my microwave cake is that it is sugar free (I use Swerve erythritol powder) and low carb at only 5.2g for the entire cake. I purchased a Wilton silicone mold at Walmart recently; they had them on clearance where all of the cake baking items are located at. It's just the perfect size to contain my cake, so I cook it in this and can dump it out on a plate instantly after it's done and eat it as is. My favorite flavor so far is lemon! The recipe base that I use is here; I omit cocoa powder unless I'm making an actual chocolate cake and add whatever extracts I like to change the flavor up. I have plenty of all the ingredients already here at home (I especially have tons of almond flour right now), so I have been doing one of these a day.

Beyond typical errands for my other half, we were home all evening in the midst of quite a rain storm (I bet the garden is going to explode after this wet day). My stock of candles at work is desperately low, so I spent my afternoon making five different scents of 18 total candles. Even though it is time consuming, I was able to watch TV shows on my phone the entire time (current show I'm finishing up is a couple of seasons of Food Network Star). I am kind of sad, though, because I am totally out of a couple of fragrances and almost out of tins (only three left); however, I am totally broke and really can't afford to repurchase supplies. I desperately need to stop bleeding excess funds.

I do have great advice regarding car repairs; find a good AT HOME mechanic! Even though the results are somewhat mixed, I do trust my mechanic to get the job done right for the best price possible. He recently fixed my car's A/C - I needed a new compressor - for a low price. I'd prefer to give him a bit extra on the side and have him work out in my yard than take my car to a shop and pay three or four times the price ANY DAY!

Garden Work, Free Chicken Food

I am always looking for a great deal for the family; today I had a revelation at work about what constitutes the entire family unit and freebies that benefit us. I realized that, when considering food at work that no one will eat, the chickens are a part of our unit and can greatly benefit from most of the inedible items. Today's haul for the chickens involved six large cans of matzo meal (unleavened bread crumbs ground to a semi-fine consistency) and a small bag of quinoa. I popped open one can of the matzo and opened the whole bag of quinoa and tossed it all out there for them to scratch and eat. I will start looking for produce scraps and other treats for them from other departments from now on. Even for my farm animals I'm gonna do my best to keep it freebie!

Today I was excited to see a few different plants making progress towards producing. Yesterday or the day before I noticed my jalapeno pepper in the pot starting to grow flower buds.
Click for larger image; quite a few buds popping up.
I admit that I am not hugely into spicy peppers, but I obviously am going to have to make a few exceptions this year with my success with this particular pepper plant. The other peppers are growing, but it is an extremely slow process because they are in the ground (poor soil) rather than in a pot (filled with rich potting soil as seen here). I hope I get some bell peppers before cold weather gets here.

I have a number of zucchinis well on their way to being full grown. I am hoping that I get a few more beyond those before the plants are totally done. My plants look kind of sad, but they do keep flowering and growing some new buds, so I am hopeful to see more of these arrive before I have to scrap the plants. The potatoes are still the same, as are many of the other plants, though I am seeing a lot of positives with my herbs especially. Basil, dill, and chives are all looking healthy and happy whether they are in the soil or in a pot. My repurposed onion is doing well in the ground still too!

Lastly, I am super happy to announce that I'm starting to see flower buds come in on my tomatoes!
Click for larger image; brandywine tomatoes starting to bud.
My tomatoes are organic brandywine variety; these are supposed to be large, rich tomatoes. This is my first time growing full sized tomatoes, so I am hoping they come out nicely. The previous two summers I had cherry tomatoes only. I have a lot of tomato plants, and most of them are close to this stage so I am hoping they all produce fine.

Tomorrow is a holiday here, so have a great Memorial Day and remember to keep our veterans in your mind. What they've done for us is give us our freedom, which is one of the few things that never has been free.

All Natural Low Prices

Today was a great day to leave work early; after working long, extra hours the other four days of this week I had to exit almost three and a half hours early to avoid going into overtime. I work at a natural foods market, and in my last Sample Source box I received a coupon for Seventh Generation Baby Wipes - $2 off. This most recent sales cycle at work these wipes went on sale for $2.99, and I also get an extra 20% off as my employee discount. Woodstock Farms also has all of their frozen veggies on sale for various prices (I purchased non-gmo frozen edamame - on sale for $2.29) and these also have a $1 off coupon on each bag purchased (my bags, before my 20% employee discount, were $1.29 each). With all of my discounts, sale prices, and coupons I bought all three for about $2.25! Not bad at all considering this would have been over $10 at normal price.

My excitement over my free Florida Country Superfest tickets is, sadly, going to be short lived. The disadvantage of being so isolated on our homestead in the country is that we have no one to watch the children, and our lack of trust of others with our children does not facilitate easily finding someone in a short period of time to do it. I will be picking up the tickets on Wednesday after work, but I am not sure that it will come to fruition that I get to go. I desperately want to, but my fiance is not keen on the idea of staying with the kids while I go with anyone else (I kind of want to take my Dad as a Father's Day present a week before the actual holiday). I will try to very gently continue suggesting this idea for a little while. I really do not want to sell the tickets or even give them away unless I'm one of the people going.

My detergent sample from The Laundress was not very impressive; I used it in a small load of laundry and it smelled great going in, but I really didn't notice any pleasant smells that remained after the entire washing process. I'm sure in a much larger quantity I might have enjoyed it more, but from that small sample packet I was not very impressed overall. What I really need to do is find somewhere that has Method laundry products for a fairly low price; I still have a $3 off coupon for any Method laundry product and would love to get their laundry detergent to try. When I do try them I need to do a good review for PINCHme, who originally sent me the coupons in my sample box.

Hoping to see more samples and other free items arriving in the mail soon; I will try the in shower lotion sample by Nivea soon too. Be sure to keep it freebie and embrace your freedom too - loving this backwoods life, even through the struggles!

FL Country Superfest, VoxBox Update

This week is a rough one at work with tons of extra hours (I am leaving work fairly early tomorrow to cut back on the extra hours so I don't get a ton of overtime), but today has made up for a lot of the tiredness I have been dragging myself through over the past few days. First and foremost, thanks to one of my great local radio stations, I won Florida Country Superfest Tickets!!!
So excited; I've seen Kenny and Brantley before.
Zac Brown Band and Cole Swindell are current favorites.
Not only do I get to see two of the great acts in country music right now that I've already seen once (Kenny Chesney and Brantley Gilbert), I will get to see two of my personal favorites as of right now in Zac Brown Band and Cole Swindell. My birthday isn't far down the road, so I am calling this my birthday present to myself in essence. This is so wonderful though! We are too poor to go to anything like this on a regular basis, so winning these tickets gets me a couple of nights of fun without much of anything spent. Hey, I keep it freebie in ALL things when possible!

I also got a great email today informing me that I was a part of Influenster's newest, upcoming VoxBox campaign. I will be receiving samples (or coupons to buy things for free) of facial masks, shampoos, anti-nausea (natural) meds, diaper rash cream, OreIda frozen potato products, Uncle Ben's rice products, rope candy (like Twizzlers but a different brand), and a couple of other things I believe. It's an awesome box and I'll be getting to try everything for free in exchange for my feedback on the products; this is my first VoxBox, but I'm fairly sure it involves FULL SIZE samples, which rocks... this is what my blog and my at home activities are all about, trying things for free in exchange for my unbiased feedback! Use my special referral link here to sign up and get started, and maybe you will get a VoxBox invite soon too!

I got in some samples today of laundry detergent (small sample for a small load only) from The Laundress and a sample of Nivea's In-Shower Body Lotion. This product is very intriguing for me mostly because I do not like applying lotion (most of them feel so greasy!); the idea of a lotion you rinse off in the shower is much more attractive to me because it will hopefully not leave my skin with a lotion residue. I will give these a try soon (especially the shower lotion, probably tomorrow night) and get back with you on my opinion. I will actually use the laundry detergent packet now since I have a load of icky towels in need of some assistance and bring the feedback to you all tomorrow.

Lastly, I was able to use my remaining $10 Schoola credit yesterday. I purchased a quite nice looking skirt. Hopefully that will be in within the next few weeks so I can show that one off. Remember, if you are new to their website, you can get a free $15 credit along with another $10 credit for creating your own collection on their website too for $25 of FREE clothing. They have recently started free shipping again, so you should take advantage of the $25 available for free. Be sure to use my affiliate link here to get not only $15 for yourself but an extra $15 for yours truly! Schoola is a great cause to be a part of as well; they donate funds they receive to schools for programs and other incentives.

Keep it freebie! Exciting things coming in the next week or two to keep an ear out for.

Garden Updates, BeautyKind, Mail Call

What a busy day! I apologize for the spotty posts as of late, but I have been super busy with my nine to five job that pays the bills and keeps food on our table. Either way, I have a few exciting updates about homesteading stuff, items I've gotten free in the mail, and items that will arrive in the next week. I am going to save a new book picture and review for tomorrow, along with new pictures of the chickens hopefully and maybe a review or two.

So, today was my first official harvest from my garden! How happy am I?!
This guy was a bit over 6" long but super thick.
This is a Hurakan F1 variety of zucchini, typically used for stuffing (since it's so large as you see). So, since it is a perfect vessel so to speak, a vessel it became...
Rubbed with olive oil and spices.
Then filled with pizza sauce and pizza cheeses.
Baked and gooey. Not super tender so I picked them up to bite.
I'm very happy with the end product and have about three or four other ones in the middle of growing larger. My plants are not very productive this year mostly due to poor soil quality and overcrowding (that is my fault; I was lazy and didn't want to clear my whole yard for the garden). Next year I think I'll be able to grow my garden more effectively.

So, thanks to Hunt4Freebies as always, I found out about a website called BeautyKind. BeautyKind specializes in designer bodycare products; in any normal situation I would never purchase anything so expensive as these sorts of products. The disclaimer here is that, for now, BeautyKind has a coupon for $50 off of any purchase of $50 or more! With that in mind, I joined and found a product that was $60 that was in stock; $10 for a designer fragrance is nothing terrible at all, so I went ahead and took the plunge.
For $10, this was a deal. Fair Amazon reviews too.
So, not only can you get $50 off a $50 order, there also is a referral system where you can get $25 off your first order AND give me an extra $25 when you place your first order. Here's my affiliate link; sign up using this and you will give both of us $25 each upon your first order! The coupon code for $50 off of $50 is LOVE50. Also, BeautyKind donates to a charity of your choice (there's a list of about four or five I think) when you spend money on their site; I supported the JDRF International (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

Lastly, I found mail with samples that my other half neglected to hand over to me; I would imagine these came in yesterday's mail except the Cottonelle wipes (those did come in today with a coupon too for $1 off flush wipes or 12 pack or more of toilet paper).
I love my freebies! Three separate samples.
As I use these guys I'll try to get some feedback going. I've almost used all of the Colgate Optic White toothpaste from Sample Source; I think it's a great toothpaste and can see some results in terms of whitening (mild) and huge improvement in my teeth feeling clean (more noticeable honestly). I will use the Arm and Hammer toothpaste next since the other sample is almost gone.

Keep it freebie! Book write up tomorrow along with a Schoola shoutout (again) and anything else that might turn up in the meantime.

VoxBox Survey, Zucchini Almost Ready

I skipped posting yesterday (my fault!), but needless to say it was a day without any freebies in it or anything overwhelmingly interesting. We mostly spent the day running around doing errands for my other half and our wood refinishing business. Today will be a bit of a repeat of the same, but I do have some small updates I can pass along.

I got an email sometime this morning or last night from Influenster to be included in their next VoxBox campaign; think of getting a sample box from PINCHme or Sample Source but the items are larger in size on the inside, and you are expected to complete more in depth reviews and surveys regarding the product afterwards. Also, you are required to take a survey to even qualify for the box (not everyone will qualify based on the demographics they want). It has been a while since I did my first Influenster campaign (which I am to receive a $25 Ebay gift card for!), and their VoxBoxes look wonderfully fun to participate in. Since writing has always been my "thing", I am excited to continue to use my skills with the written word to express how much I liked (or disliked) products I try for free.

I have one zucchini that is particularly large in the garden; I am expecting to cut it off and eat it within the next day or two. I will probably post a picture tomorrow evening when I do my daily Wednesday post. Most of the rest of the garden is looking fine; potatoes should be ready to harvest relatively soon and sadly my collards have been eaten a SECOND time and probably won't make it til harvest. I think the chickens or squirrels are the culprits.

I also tried the Brazilian Sleek Garnier Fructis line last night (shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner); I actually kind of liked the products. The leave in is too heavy for my hair I think, but I like the smell of the products overall (a little fruitier than I normally would like, very tropical, but I can dig it) and it seems to have helped with frizz a bit. I don't have my typical whispy hair halo this morning yet, so I can at least approve of that. I will use the coupons that I have hopefully to double up with a sale and try it out in a larger size in the future.

Keep it freebie - I'm being told to hurry up so we can go, so I better GO!

Chickens and Books, FREE Sonic Game on Amazon!

Keeping it short and simple today because, frankly, I want to go read my new book, The Watchers by Jon Steele. This book was actually his first novel, from what I have read on Amazon, and so far it seems fairly interesting.
Not gonna lie, the cover was pretty so I bought it.
It seems to deal a lot with spiritual matters, and even though I am not one to be overly religious I do find that some books like this are more interesting than they'd be otherwise. I will give a nice review when I am done reading it. I personally got lucky and found this at Dollar Tree and it's a beautiful hardback edition with no damage on it whatsoever. LOVE Dollar Tree for random book finds.

I fed the chicks and their mama some scraps from a leftover frozen pizza today (cut it up so they'd have an easier time eating), and I snapped a fair picture of them. All you can see are eight babies, but there is a ninth behind her. We did lose two (one drowned but we fixed the issue with the water, the other was smooshed by something that fell on it), but these other nine are doing fabulous and are already getting in their second set of "real" feathers. Their mama is super protective too!
Judy and the brood. They were eating and let me get closer than normal.
I will be watching these guys closely to see how many hens we end up with; soon we will be overloaded with eggs and chickens to take care of! We desperately need to upgrade the enclosure to where the adult chickens won't fly out; currently only the babies are permanently contained in the pen until they are also big enough to fly out. My hopes are to keep them enclosed moreso to be sure that I can get all of the eggs possible and avoid excessive chick production. They are super cute babies and a whole lot of fun to watch. They loved getting some scraps tonight!

Today the Amazon App Store has a free download of Sonic CD the app. My almost six year old son is a huge fan of Sonic games for the computer, so it was a natural thing to immediately download this as soon as I found out it was free (you can always count on Hunt4Freebies with the hook up on free stuff). He's been playing it for ten or fifteen minutes already! He's an extremely smart boy and learns so quickly; I was not nearly as good at games as he is at his age.
Free today (5/17/15) only on the Amazon App Store!
This definitely wins me some brownie points for the day with my oldest. He is absolutely excited to play a new Sonic game. Sharing my phone with him is no easy thing to do, but if I make him sit at the table I can make sure he's only playing his game and not getting into other stuff.

Keep it freebie, go download Sonic CD for your babies - they'll thank you!

Veganist by Kathy Freston - Review

Here it is, folks. Can be found in Dollar Tree.

I would first like to start this review by stating that, in general, I have very little against a vegan diet **IF** it involves plenty of healthy fats (obviously here I'd be going with coconut, olive, and avocado), enough protein (I guess legumes? I am not a fan of soy but soy would have to be the most optimal), minimal carbohydrate and no grains. If Ms. Freston had a version of a lower carbohydrate, healthy-fat laden vegan plan to outline, then I would be more than willing to endorse her for being a great voice for the vegan community and nutritionally forward thinking. This is not to say that I would tell anyone to eliminate animal products; I feel there are little to no benefits of completely eliminating animal products from a well-followed low carb regimen. Unfortunately, this book is rife with unsound nutritional advice based upon research that is flawed and simply outdated. Let's start there and finish up with what I do agree with Ms. Freston about (yes, there actually ARE points in this book that I think have a little bit of merit).

This book is split into chapters she has decided to call "promises"; her claim is that she has ten promises that, if followed and heeded, it will forever change one's life for the better with regards to health, overall environmental impact, and spirituality. These statements are beyond bold, but I have managed to finish the book and can tell you that some of the "promises" aren't so far-fetched, but I specifically have big issues with many statements put forth in chapters 1, 2, 3, and 5. The biggest fallacies spread throughout all four of these chapters involves the nutritional superiority of veganism versus other weight loss methods, including a few sections where Ms. Freston and other "experts" purposefully bad mouth low carbohydrate plans. This book was published in 2011, so I guess it is possible that much of the information that has been thoroughly vetted over the last four years might not have been widely accepted at that time, but I personally think that to a vegan "low carbohydrate" always imprints an image of tons of slaughtered animals and abused dairy creatures. Rather than confront any large bodies of evidence regarding the health benefits that most people can reap from living a low carb lifestyle, Ms. Freston and others take a little time out of their vegan pride parade to serve up some outright nutritional falsehoods to make their nutritional positions look more ideal.

Promise One is really the chapter I found to be the hardest to trudge through; it is entitled "Your Body Will Find and Maintain Its Ideal Weight - Effortlessly". I do not disagree with the point made throughout the chapter that fiber can be a great weight loss tool since it bulks up in the digestive tract and makes your body think it is fuller than it actually is, and I think almost anyone could benefit from fiber as long as there is an adequate increase in fluid intake at the same time (otherwise you might find yourself not visiting a bathroom for a day or two). I also applaud her for making the distinction that added sugars and refined grains in processed foods are to be avoided. The rest of this chapter is fairly downhill from there; in the first page Ms. Freston demonizes fats (especially saturated fats), claims that all the weight lost on low carb plans is water weight and nothing more, and states that "complex" carbohydrates are a great energy source and (a little further in the book) that they are necessary. Many low carb experts have written books that highlight the scientific reasons none of these things previously stated are true; I especially suggest reading through Atkins (his informative low carb bibles are easy to read and understand and well before their time), Gary Taubes' landmark Good Calories, Bad Calories or any of the work done by Dr. Eric Westman, the doctor who has taken up Dr. Atkins' work and is in charge of Duke University's weight loss clinic. These fallacies are also easily refuted through a variety of websites (a favorite of mine is Authority Nutrition) with very little searching on the internet. Let it be said, though, that for the minimal good information this chapter has for legitimate weight loss aids, most of the chapter is one long diatribe of outdated information with little science in the last twenty years to back it up, along with anecdotal "evidence" that low carb is neither sustainable nor a way to lose fat (as someone who has been low carb for over two years and has lost 68 lbs, and knows many more people who have had similar success, I beg to differ loudly).

Promise Two uses similar scientific fallacies to try and state that veganism is the best way to reverse most chronic diseases including diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and cancer. Following the belief that cholesterol, saturated fat, and animal products are the main cause for any chronic problem - especially heart disease in this chapter - Ms. Freston leads us through a couple of waves of interviews with "experts" and personal recollections from people who have adopted a vegan lifestyle with gusto to rejuvenate their health. Now, I really have nothing against people changing their lifestyles to regain their health since I am someone who has done it over the last two years as well, but I do take offense to the arguments presented as to why animal products are even to be blamed for diabetes of all things. Claiming that fat blocks the proper usage of insulin in the cells is just ludicrous; by the time insulin is so prevalent in the bloodstream the real issue is loss of sensitivity to insulin. Fats and cholesterol are important in the body and involved in a number of processes such as proper hormone creation and utilization and transporting insulin to where it needs to go. Avoiding cholesterol will not make one's blood sugar go down any faster; the real issue with high blood sugar is the presence of too much sugar either due to excessive glucose intake or excessive intake of other carbohydrates such as starchy foods. Many weight loss clinics that promote low carb plus higher fat lifestyles (also known as "ketogenic" diets) have evidence galore of the dramatic improvements patients see when on a strict low carb plan; I feel that Ms. Freston's attack of animal products as to be the blame for chronic illness is misfounded and an outright lie. The real blame should be pointed in the direction of processed foods, added sugars, excessive intake of grains, and overindulgence in foods that humans are not meant to eat (or drink) in large amounts. A vegan diet low in processed food products and excess sugars will be a benefit to anyone looking to lose weight and I do not deny that; however, I feel it is extremely bad form to pass along information that is just plain wrong to people who are desperate for answers and in need of truth and guidance. Many studies exist that have proven that too LOW of cholesterol (especially in women) is more deadly and worrisome than having high cholesterol at all; claiming that having cholesterol below 200 (and preferably much lower than that according to this book) is the only way to avoid a heart attack and excluding all fats and going vegan is the BEST solution is in no way true.

Promise Three claims a longer and better life; this chapter is basically a follow up of avoiding chronic diseases and other conditions spoken of in the previous chapter. My issues with this chapter are about the same so I won't rehash it. Promise Five is the last chapter I had overwhelming contention with; it claims you will save lots of money eating vegan - WHICH IS TRUE. The main fallacy in this chapter is that Ms. Freston claims that meats are "cheap" due to a variety of subsidies that the animal agriculture sector receives from the government. As someone who eats meat a majority of the time, I would like to state that meats are in no way CHEAP and the prices of such products have skyrocketed over the past few years. Beef especially has been hit hard, and many of my favorite forms of beef are nearly double the price I paid for them even just a year ago (ground beef being the biggest culprit right now); pork and especially bacon are also a lot higher priced than I've seen them before. Using the "meat is cheap" as a supposed excuse as to why people eat so much meat is just ridiculous; it is very expensive to be low carb - much moreso than if I was to live an unprocessed vegan lifestyle - and I think the misinformation in this chapter negates most of the arguments she presents further within.

So, it sounds like I agree with nothing that Ms. Freston presents, but there is definitely a large portion of this book that hits home; most of the last part of this book is focusing on the evils of factory farms and large scale animal agriculture, and I actually fully agree with the point that is made that commercially grown animals are treated poorly. As a homesteader and Libertarian, my ultimate goal in life is to eventually be totally self-sufficient and not rely upon anyone, especially the government or commerical businesses, for any resources that I may need. This would also include raising my own animals at home exclusively as a food source; we are well on our way with a flock of chickens who supply eggs, one of the most complete and perfect food sources of protein available. On a small family farm like ours, we are able to raise animals in a fashion that is extremely humane with plenty of space for our animals. They are fed, watered, and well-treated; our chickens are free to roam our entire property with little to no interference. It only takes hens about five weeks to hatch a nest of eggs; our first experience with new chickens has been beyond positive with a total of nine chicks who made it through the first week of life. I personally believe that small family farms and raising humane sources of animal products is the key to a better food supply in our country; I don't think that a total elimination of the raising of farm animals is necessary or warranted as long as the animals are treated fairly and eventually slaughtered without excessive suffering or abuse. Ms. Freston, however, in no way mentions the small homestead only keeping animals as a source of personal sustenance and subsistence; rather, the chapters that focus on the wrongs of animal agriculture only speak of large commercial farms and do not offer any alternatives or concessions that smaller farms could be the key to a better food supply. The author instead suggests using all the grain that is usually grown for commercial farms to feed the world's hungry, especially soy and corn crops; soy is notoriously intensive and hard on the land while also being a very common allergen, and corn is also a frequent allergen. Corn and soy are also two of the most common genetically modified crops in the world. It is poor form to completely exclude a worthwhile portion of the food chain that is represented by smaller farms and personal farms such as mine and imply that since the large farms are so terrible that all forms of animal agriculture are terrible; there is no argument presented that really gives small farms a bad name or why we should not grow our own food. I firmly believe that the key to our future lies in going back to our roots of being sustainable on a household level without so many handouts from the government and need of grocery stores and commercial farms of all types (including those that grow plants for money and subsidies, which the corn and soy industries both get tons of). I hope to not buy meat at the grocery store in the next few years ever again and rely solely upon my own homestead as my source for food or look to trade other small farmers for items that I cannot easily raise on my own farm.

Alright, I apologize a bit for the lengthy review, but to sum it all up: animals, dietary saturated fats, and cholesterol are NOT the reason we are fat and sick; rather, the blame needs to be pointed at a food supply filled with excessively processed items and added sugars in everything (a supporting role in the blame game should also be given to grains of all types). Many outlets of science are available that irrefutably prove that fats are not as evil as they've been portrayed over the last 40+ years by the mainstream medical profession and media. I totally agree with Ms. Freston's view of commercial farming and animal cruelty issues; I believe the solution to that problem, however, is totally different than the suggestion that animals should never be raised as a form of food. I believe that small farms and families growing their own food (be it plant or animal) will be the ultimate solution to the problems we are seeing with the food supply in the United States; totally excommunicating the public from the grocery industry will cripple the real villains (Big Sugar, Big Food lobbies especially) and bring about a true revolution in the way of health, lifestyle, and politics too.

Strive for self-sustenance and treat your animals well while they are with you; yet, I say enjoy the fruits of your homesteading labors rather than abstain from eating any animal products. Big Food and Big Sugar is your real enemy, not a small family homestead raising animals to survive.

Free Fennel - What to Do?

So, I obtained a free locally grown, organic fennel bulb today (with tops). The typical method of cooking fennel from what I gather is either pan roasting it in the oven or sometimes using it in a salad of sorts as a crunchy, licorice flavored accent. Well, I had a mind to try a slightly non-traditional method of cooking this funny looking bulb: I wanted to pan fry it and caramelize it a bit. I don't always have the best instincts with food, but I had a feeling that this would come out tasty. I still had the green onions (free also last week), so I sliced them thin with the fennel at an almost equal thinness. With a couple of tablespoons of butter, a bit of salt, and some pepper I cooked them down til the onions were caramelized; the fennel wasn't totally caramelized but it was cooked enough not to be super crunchy. For an almost entirely FREE dinner, it was delicious!

So, along with the fennel today, I brought home a few other items: three (somewhat cheap) butterfly necklaces for my mom and two daughters, a bottle of lotion by Giovanni (Avocado and Olive Oil) that I think I might also give to my mom, a dozen eggs, and collagen powder by Country Life (Maxi Skin, a new product that is supposed to be awesome with visible results after 4 weeks - I will do a full review after the bottle is gone). Today was a wonderful freebie day at work! I am hoping that Seventh Generation wipes will go on sale soon so I can use my coupon; I also need to shop around and find where Method laundry products are cheapest (I have two $3 off coupons for that too).

We have inundated with rain over the past two days, and my garden is both happy and not happy all at the same time. The plants can always use the water, especially with the excessive dry heat we've had for a week or more, but my garden is on a hill and the water runs down it and washes the soil away from some of my plants that really need the soil such as potatoes. Some of my plants are still fairly fragile, especially my dill (much sturdier than it used to be, but still very frilly and prone to falling over); I spent some time this afternoon out in the wet using the little bit of garden compost that I have available as soil to hill up some of these plants that have been having issues falling over. We actually decided to stake a couple of the potato plants (the two larger ones specifically) because no amount of shoring up the base of these guys was going to prevent them from falling over. I think everything is a little happier now; I hope we actually don't get rain tomorrow because my plants that are potted in buckets are not draining enough with the amount of water that's coming from the rain.

The only other updates I have are that, with the last $2 in my wallet, I purchased a couple of $1 scratch off tickets and won $5. That's about as close to free money as it gets for me. I also have been continuing to read this terrible book (Veganist by Kathy Freston); the science is so bad that sometimes I just don't know how to contain myself. Yet, just out of pure fascination with how delusional and wrong she is about metabolism, I continue to read this book faithfully. When I'm done I'll pass along my two cents.

I'm about done for tonight - I will try to get some pictures together tomorrow for the blog too. Keep it freebie!

Why Freebies?

So, with it being a slow day in the office in all ways possible, I figured I would ask an obvious question, considering I spend much of my free time dedicated to acquiring freebies (or doing other homesteading chores). WHY in the world do I do so much to get such small little free things? Well, let me try to chat about it and put it in perspective.

Even though there's no direct monetary gain in any of this that I'm doing between the blog and various websites that send me free products to try, I am almost marketing myself and my skills to receive gains in other ways than just money. We are low income, and I already have a full time job with a small business on the side; I consider my blog, freebies, and homesteading stories to all be my third job of sorts. I have always loved writing and doing things like journals and blogs, so this is not something that is difficult for me to do in a short period of time with little resources. If I can market myself in my free time, I can add additional value to my contributions to the home and maybe, one day, I can pull us out of the near poverty level that we are at now.

I believe that, with my intelligence level and writing abilities, I can be more than useful to companies and websites that are interested in people who are willing to review a product honestly with total fairness for no monetary compensation in exchange for trying the product for free. Though I am involved in the natural foods industry and have been for almost ten years, I am overall as unbiased as possible when I try different things that I gather in my website wanderings. Having something like this as a creative outlet (I have no actual artistic talent, so this is about as creative as I get) is a wonderful thing and helps keep me sane in the eye of the storm that is my life. I have so many things going on that sometimes having this blog to update is a highlight of my day!

That being said, there will always be things that I get that I in some way find fault in; we are all human and have likes AND dislikes. I am in the process of reading a book that, from the moment I read the cover and description of it, I knew I would NOT really like it but wanted to read it for the sake of having the opposite side of what I believe heard. The book, which I will do a full review of in the next week, is Veganist by Kathy Freston. I would like to note at this point in time that I did buy the book legitimately, but it was at the dollar store so I only paid a dollar plus tax (I am not sure I would spend more than that on this). I have briefly (see my first blog post ever) touched upon the fact that I am a weight loss success story at 68lbs gone forever over the past two years. I also have not made it a secret that my success can entirely be attributed to a low carbohydrate lifestyle, focusing on whole foods, a high intake of natural saturated fats (this is called a "ketogenic" diet), and avoiding more than 20g of carbohydrates per day. This book, even only a few pages in, is the antithesis of most of what I believe so this review will get interesting. Look forward to that in the future, and I will GLADLY take any questions anyone has regarding low carb and respond as best as I can.

Now you know why I like to keep it freebie! I will continue to do so as much as humanly possible!

Garden and Chicken Pics

I have been very busy today between work and home; I also spent a long time yesterday night making candles. First I'll update on the chickens. We are still at nine chicks with the older hen, while the younger hen has seemingly abandoned her nest (we had to move it because she was under our house with fifteen eggs). We are sad to lose so many eggs, but it is not a proper place to have a nest in the midst of tons of insulation. Here is our older hen and her babies.
Action shot - she won't let me be near her for long.
I also spent a good amount of time watering the garden and weeding a bit. I don't really have any super interesting tidbits on the garden except it seems like things are going well. Garden:
Three basil plants. Basil is easy to grow.
 My healthiest collard plant.
All of my dill plants are finally starting to take off.
Jalapeno, my only somewhat okay looking pepper.
Potatoes, soon to be dug out I would imagine.
 Sunflowers, towering over tomato plants.
Watermelon vines are small but slowly moving.
This is my largest zucchini. Hope they get big.
I should be getting samples from a variety of sources in the mail soon. I haven't tried any different products recently, but I would like to note that my natural deodorant trial is still going AMAZING. I am so overly impressed that I have not smelled bad once in the week plus that I have been using this product, and I am already convinced that I will keep using this in the future. No more antiperspirants or aluminum based products for me!

Keep it free(bie)!

Reviews of Samples - Shea Moisture, Colgate, Breathe Right

We started using our samples last night from both the PINCHme and Sample Source boxes. My fiance Chris tried a Breathe Right strip, while I have been using the toothpaste (Optic White) and the Shea Moisture shampoo and hair masque. One day worth of use isn't a great picture, but obviously with sample sized products I'm kind of limited in how well I can assess them without purchasing a full size product.

Firstly, I'll start with the Shea Moisture haircare items. These packets will last me two uses I think.
Of these, I have the two on the far right (shampoo, masque).
I like the fact that this brand really is trying to be natural; of what I am used to selling at work in a natural foods market, all of the "no parabens, no sulfates" etc statements that most companies strive for are listed on the label. My sample packets do not have ingredients unfortunately, so I can't give my full opinion on what kind of quality I really think the ingredients individually are. Both packets smelled great, but I liked how the shampoo smelled more than the masque (the masque was kind of fruity, while the shampoo had more of an earthy, fresh smell that I liked more). I decided after using these to not use my leave-in conditioner after my shower just to see what kind of effect just the shampoo and masque alone would have. I didn't find there to be any dramatic effects after one use of both, but I wish I could continue using them on a long term basis to get a better estimation of them.

The Colgate Optic White toothpaste I received is a travel size, so it will last maybe a week.
Minty freshness of toothpaste.
One thing I will be trying to keep an eye on is the increased whiteness claims; I am a big coffee drinker and haven't ever been to a dentist, so my teeth aren't exactly the whitest of the white. I will definitely be sure to make note of any increased whiteness in a week's time of using this product and will be trying to use it twice a day (I admit that I am not the most tooth brushing compliant person in the world).  I liked the mint flavor (and it is a little strong, which didn't bother me much), and my teeth still feel very clean hours after using the product. I can't tell yet any dramatic changes, but I am sure that I'll have more to report as time continues on.

Chris used the Breathe Right strips, but he told me today that he was having issues getting it to stick on properly. I will personally try to use the other myself I think tonight; I generally do sleep very well, but if these make my sleep even better I think I might be able to tell. I have never slept with anything stuck to my face (and I don't think he really had either), so it might be a similar situation as to what he experienced last night. Especially since it's a non-medicated form of sleep aid, I am definitely willing to put it to the test myself to see if I notice anything dramatic (or even subtle).

We also received a free catalog with stickers from Henry Rifles today. We love stickers around this house, and since my other half is in the firearms industry we love rifles for sure. It's going to good use and he claimed the sticker as his own! I am sure he'll glance in the catalog too.

I watered the garden today, fed the chicks a couple of times, and am in the midst of working on candle business stuff (I am making four different batches of candles tonight). I am in the process of also researching a way to sell my candles online; I am finding that the process of using Ebay and Etsy is more than my patience can endure. I wish there was a large scale market place that wasn't so complicated and small business friendly. I might look into hosting my own site for sales, since I am not terrible with computers and coding and really want an easier set up than twenty steps to sell one item with fees on top of that too.

Time to work on candles! Keep it freebie!

Double The Samples and Cash!

What's better than getting one sample box in the mail...? Getting two! What's even better than getting two sample boxes in the mail? Getting mailed $10 in cash with $20 more coming upon completion of a survey for Nielsen! Today's mail call for this mama was a late Mother's Day gift, frankly; if the mail had delivered on a Sunday I would have been inundated with these awesome gifts! Firstly, I must say how awesome it is to get a Nielsen survey in the mail; they claim to mail cash directly to you for the chance to do their surveys, and THEY DO! Here's my picture from my envelope:
$10 in the mail, $20 more for a VERY short survey.
It's hard not to LOVE this deal; I got paid $30 for about five minutes' worth of a survey. Just think, if you put it into an hourly perspective, I got paid about $360 an hour. Nielsen can mail me a survey any time they like and I will gladly assist them with their efforts to answer any questions they have!

I got my second PINCHme box in today; this one was a full haul rather than only two different products. I am especially excited to try the Shea Moisture products for my sad hair.
This was a great haul from PINCHme. I especially am
excited for the Shea Moisture stuff. Other half will sleep
good tonight - the ZzzQuil is a 6 serving box!!!
Chris did not like the PezHedz candy; he is very particular about texture and the gelatin-free gummies are just a bit softer texture wise than he likes. The kids enjoyed them though and ate them all quickly. I already have had the PureVia sweetener and we thew the package away without even opening it; it is a very poor replacement for real stevia. The haircare stuff is exciting; the hair masque is something I definitely plan on using a few times. This sample is HUGE, and I have such thin, fine hair that it'll last for quite a while.

Sample Source's first box for me came in today as well. What a joy! I actually have eight different products in this box, which is more than what PINCHme sends, but Sample Source is only every few months instead of monthly like PINCHme. It's a bit of a trade off, but I got a couple of natural foods brands items in this box including Seventh Generation wipes and a bag of Pumpkin Flax Granola from Nature's Path. Either way, this is a good haul for a box too.
Even though the gummies had sugar, I ate them.
Four grams of carbs on a low intake day isn't bad.
Chris is excited for the Breathe Right strips (hard to see but they are to the right of the granola), while I am excited for the hair stuff again. I used the two wipes on the baby already; I got a $2 off coupon for the same wipes so with my discount at work I could almost get another regular sized package of the same wipes for free. If they go on sale soon I will post more about my coupon score. The Truvia is awful so it also got thrown away much like the Pure Via. Real stevia only for this lady!

And lastly, we refreshed my Pro Flowers bouquet today. One flower (a yellow rose, my favorite) was sadly wilted already and we threw it away. I am down to 11 flowers, and they have fully opened up now. They look okay, but I am still unimpressed as a whole; I've definitely gotten better flowers from other services such as 1-800-Flowers that were not already bruised upon arrival.
Not bad, but one flower was dead.
I'm a big fan of the yellow roses here.
I will say that they opened up very nicely, and even with only 11 instead of the full dozen the vase looks much fuller and less sad now that the blooms are really getting large. They also do smell very nice; I love the smell of roses almost more than any other flowers. My mom is a nice lady!

In the coming days I will update my reviews for these various products we have gotten in the mail today. Chris is always a very polarizing reviewer, and the sleeping items I got in (Breathe Right strips and ZzzQuil) are both things entirely for him. I am sure he'll let me know what he thinks, too!

Have a great day, folks, and keep it free(bie)!
